Gearbox Reparation

My freewill was missing, i.e. welded (marked in red), so i decided to install a new freewill.

I decided to change all the sealings too.

  • 1 – differential
  • 2 – 1st shaft
  • 3 – 2nd shaft
  • 4 – 1st and 2nd shafts

And the bearings.

  • 1 – differential
  • 2 – 1st shaft
  • 3 – 2nd shaft

Because i didn’t know what is the situation with the welded freewill, i bought a gear wheel for the 4th gear. Both, old and new, have 29 teeth.

And a full set for the freewill.

Recently i felt that the clutch became very soft. When i took off the engine, i saw that the pressure disk had cleaved (marked in red) and i returned the old to TrabantWelt and bought a new one.

I had a suspicion that clutch release bearing could be the reason, so i bought an original “graphite” one.

I also bought a new 1st drive shaft.

2026-02-21: On the first run i used an improvised washer behind the freewill (inner diameter 1in), but later i decided to install a good one, so today i disassembled the gearbox again.

I added oil and i drove less than 5 km to test. I drained the oil today and it looked like this:

This is the oil. It is not good for the winter.

This time i’ll use75W-90.
